This is not the birth of Goth. That has more to do with Pete Murphy and his band Bauhaus. The Birthday Party were more akin to The Doors and The Velvet Underground, despite the dyed black hair and eyeliner. There's also a touch of early Beefheart and Gris Gris era Dr John. 'Release The Bats' is the nearest The Birthday Party got to vamp camp. Ignore the imagery; this is a great rolling thunder of a record in its own right...
