69.  Born To Run. (LP). Bruce Springsteen. 1975.
Born To Run was Springsteen's third album and pretty much the make or break album for him. The first two had found him a smidgeon of critical acclaim and had other artists clamouring to release covers of Springsteen songs, 'Blinded By The Light' and 'Spirits In The Night' from Manfred Mann's Earthband, and '4th July, Asbury Park. Sandy' The Hollies.
Springsteen knew that he had to deliver if he was to live up to the hype, "the future of rock n roll" was how John Landau had promoted him. For 'Born To Run' Springsteen drew on all of his influences, especially the Spector 'Wall of Sound' and old acts such as Gary U.S. Bonds and Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. The track 'Born To Run' is a celebration of what it meant to be young in 1975 America. Here was a song about cars and girls that made you want a slice of the action. "American Graffiti" in four minutes. "Girls comb their hair in rear-view mirrors and the boys try to look so hard."
Born To Run' is a fin-tailed, chrome wheeled beauty let loose on Highway 9.
