78.  A History of Popular Music.
1999. (L.P) Prince. 1980.
The 'Dirty Mind' album had established Prince as a cult hero, but it wasto be '1999' which turned him into a star. Prince was Jimi Hendrix, Rick James, Little Richard and James Brown all rolled into one Bambi eyed bundle of funk. '1999' was explosive, covering themes such as sex, death, war & peace, God & the Devil, but mostly sex, set to a sizzling techno funk beat. Alongside the apocalyptic title track were songs about girls and cars 'Little Red Corvette' and 'Lady Cab Driver' which were just humorous enough to allay fears of misogyny. Prince was mad, bad and dangerously talented...
Looks like Prince doesn't allow file sharing so no audio examples, but you all know '1999' and 'Little Red Corvette'.
