Autobahn originated from a Ralf Hutter car journey, where he hung a microphone out of the window of his old, grey Volkswagen and recorded the noises of a trip down one of Germany's autobahn. The resulting tape of tyres in the rain, passing lorries, car-horns and engine noises inspired the newly formed Kraftwerk to make the full 22 minute, side long 'Autobahn' the title track of their first album.
The song was edited for single release and was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, unfortunately Kraftwerk weren't business savvy and sold the rights to the album to Phonogram for the princely sum of $2000. It was to be 10 years before the band saw money for their efforts when they singed a deal with EMI in 1984.
