79.  Love Will Tear Us Apart. Joy Division. 1980.
'Love Will Tear Us Apart' sold 200,000 copies on the back of singer Ian Curtis' suicide. Ian was having trouble in his relationship with his wife and bitter irony meant that love really did tear them apart.
Factory Records cannot have envisaged cult band Joy Division selling so many records. The record also served as a requiem for the band, who decided to bury Joy Division along with Curtis and carried on as New Order. They had much more success as New Order, going on to record mega hit 'Blue Monday' and 'World In Motion', which surely must have brought a wry smile to the spirit of Ian Curtis...
